August 2010 I.B.M. Ring # 243 Meeting

posted by: Randy @ 11:08 am

The Canton Magicrafters, IBM Ring # 243, had a good meeting last night. We had 21 members and 3 guests show up. It was teach a trick night and lots of members did some magic. Also got a few new potential members to show up. Plans made for David Ginn workshop in October and the club’s magic banquet in November. Looking forward to the September meeting at Tim Angeloni’s magic shop in Louisville, The Magic Encounter. See you then!

Making Your Own Gimmicks

posted by: Randy @ 11:03 am

I have noticed that many magic tricks that you purchase today comes with a DVD that not only explains the trick, but also tells you how to construct the gimmick. The advantages of this is that it keeps the cost of the effect lower. This is a good thing, but does the quality of the magic trick suffer when you make the gimmick and not a professional. Some magicians are naturally good at making gimmicks, but some are not. When you are finished, the gimmick does not always look like the one on the DVD. This can ruin the trick. I personally would like to purchase the trick with the difficult gimmicks already made and pay a little more for the trick. The peace of mind that the gimmick looks good and will work is worth the few extra dollars.

Joahua Jay Lecture in Canton Ohio

posted by: Randy @ 9:44 am

I don’t know about you, but I thought that the Joshua Jay lecture was one of the best lectures that I have seen in a very long time. His routines were so thought out and flowed so well. Every effect seemed to tell a story. Even for those “non-card” men, this was something that even they could appreciate. And it was certainly great to see Josh again doing so well and back in his home town and home magic club. He has certainly made a name for himself in the world of magic and everyone in Canton is very proud of him. If anyone who reads this blog and has a chance to see Josh either in a live performance or in a lecture, you should really do so. You will not be sorry.

Card Tricks Are The Best

posted by: Randy @ 12:15 am

I get kidded a lot because I love card tricks. I have done card tricks all my life and they are what got me into magic and one of the things that keeps me interested. Card tricks are great because of the wide variety of effects. You can have some very simple self working card trick or some knuckle busting effect that requires multiple difficult slight of hand moves. Or anywhere in between and the audience response is always the same. That of complete mystery and a “how did you do that” look on their faces. Card tricks can be used in any magic act from kids shows to adult ones, from professional to beginners skill levels, and from mentalist acts to walk around restaurant magic. they are in my opinion, the most powerful tools in a magician’s arsenal. So don’t under estimate the power of a card trick, your audience will love it. And visit me at the Magic of Randy and put a little magic into your life.

Are Magic Tricks Easier?

posted by: Randy @ 7:23 am

Are magic tricks of today easier to perform than they were a few years ago. I think so. It seems that gimmicked cards and coins are taking the place of slights of hand. Tricks today are being made, or remade,  so that anyone is capable of doing them with very little or no slights. Now don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad thing. I’m just making an observation. Although I do think that this methodology does take something away from the trick. What do you think?
